Toight at Kensington Town Hall, I hosted an event for the City of Melbourne’s #melbourneconversations series on ‘What does it mean to belong?’ My fellow Agent-Provacateurs were Melbourne icon, Arnold Zable and the amazing Zione Walker-Nthenda.
Delivering some seriously introspective banter and the odd eyebrow raiser on this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, this event considered if Melbourne is a great multicultural city, why does not everyone feel included or safe? We asked what does it mean to be a Melburnian at a time when global leaders seem comfortable speaking the language of “us against them”? And, are anti-racism campaigns and TV programs helpful?
This was an open discussion about diversity, identity and belonging and importantly, a participatory event – where the audience told their stories and help set the evening’s agenda!
Thanks to CoM for organising a thought provoking event on a pertinent issue. Given the government’s efforts to legitimise greater vilification through a weaker 18C of the RDA, announced on this precise day, our efforts seemed all the more worthy.
