Congratulations to Perth based artist, Abdul Abdullah for his latest exhibtion Siege, launched on Saturday June 21st, 2014. This event comprises a collection of digitally remastered photographic works reflecting the anxiety and frustration felt by people from Abduls generation. Specifically ‘Siege’ speaks to the the demonising of young Muslim objectified as’ the other’ in contemporary Western discourse. Images are arresting and confronting in their deliberate bid to provoke the viewer into either a sense of discomfort or connection.
“While Siege talks specifically to the experience of young Muslims, the issues and questions raised are relevant to the experience of young people from all ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, with Abdullah relating to the general experience of ‘the other’ in broad terms. Cultural anxiety and a sense of displacement are a commonality shared by all migrant communities, and feelings of frustration and disempowerment are symptomatic of low socio-economic conditions. Abdullah considers himself an “outsider amongst outsiders” and hopes that he can use his practice to promote a cross-cultural dialogue“
This exhibtion will run from 19th June until 12th July , Fehily Contemporary Gallery, 3A Glasshouse Road, Collingwood
