Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the Islamic Shia Council of Victoria (ISCV) inaugural ‘Meet & Greet Dinner’. The ISCV is home to over 50 Shi’a organisations across Victoria whose role is to represent the Shi’a community and be the point of contact between the government, the media and other NFP organisations for the state of Victoria.
The theme for the evening was “unity” and as such hundreds of guests representing intra and interfaith communities were represented. This function provided an opportunity to to also share what the various Shi’a organisation leaders are doing as well as grasp a better understanding of their many initiatives for the future.
Speakers included The Hon Robin Scott, VMC Chair Helen Kapalos, Youth Commissioner Sam Almaliki, and Emeritus Prof. Joe Camileri among Muslim, Christian and Jewish community leaders across Victoria.
This was an evening of welcomed positivity in a climate sullied by intense islamophobia. The many volunteers for the ISCV warmly welcomed guests, spiriting the audience into smiles, embraces and hope for Victorian Muslims.
