I attended the Wheeler Centre tonight to hear the inimitable Maxine Beneba Clarke discuss how writing about unbelonging in ‘The Hate Race’ morphed into a critique of lived racism.

All power to her in proclaiming the brutal reality of Australia’s colonial violence yet to be acknowledged. This woman deftly owned feminism, speaking to why black feminism is central to this critique. With poise she  shut down racists with her stories of truth about growing up black in white world. Loved it

Her novel, ‘Foreign Soil’ remains one of my favourite books. Cannot wait to read The Hate Race, which has received relentless praise from across the globe. Maxine is one of this country’s most powerful writers- check out her work and  see why.
