“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” – Muhammad Ali, R.I. P. (1942-2016)
An inspiration not just for conquering the boxing ring as world heavy weight champion- but for his courage to speak out against racism, civil rights abuses, conscription and an unwavering commitment to his faith.
Ali was the first African American Muslim I remember as a child. I recall watching in fascination his pre and post match interviews, as he uttered his ‘I am the greatest’ mantra repeatedly. Back then and now he seemed larger than life; a fearless champion. His delivery in and out of the ring was signature poetry.
Who was this man that defied staying in his lane? His confidence was sublime. And his logic, like his boxing game, a knock out.
This extraordinary black Muslim hero shook up the world with on point philosophy and a big beautiful heart.
May his soul be elevated to the highest heaven and his legend nourish us in his absence.
