Tonight in Canberra at The #TuggeranongArtsCentre, I participated in a panel called ‘Penalties & Purpose’, as part of the centre’s ‘The Human Condition’ program.
The program comprises several projects that explore themes from ‘Another Day in Paradise’- a major exhibition by artist Myuran Sukumaran, who along with Andrew Chan and Van Nguyen faced the death penalty in Indonesia.
My panel discussion was facilitated by former ABC correspondent Ginny Stein, who covered the reintroduction of the death penalty in Philippines.
With the fate of the Bali 9 and the executions of Sukumaran and Chan provoked strong reactions and debate here about the global use of the death penalty, incarceration and rehabilitation. My copanelists included Julian McMahon SC- Barrister, President of reprieve Australia; Dr Amanda Porter, Senior Researcher at Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning, UTS; and me. We covered these issues and related material about the purpose, impacts and aftermath of incarceration. This included reference to populism, priorities, profit, the prison industrial complex, privilege, systemic racism and organising for change.
