This morning, as Chair of the Aust Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights, I welcomed the Federal Minister for Social Services, the Hon. Kevin Andrews- to a round table discussion between Muslim community representatives in the service sector, including social workers, police and Imams. This was a cross sectarian forum that frankly raised concerns about family violence, relationship counselling and parenting education, amongst other issues. Clear endorsement was given for concerted research and govt funding to enable a shift in the status quo for Muslim families in crises. Congrats to Joumanah and team at AMWCHR for coordinating Australia’s first such initiative. This candid session revealed some deep seated inequity in gender expectations and cultural expectations which need unpacking from leaders as well as at grassroots levels. From here, follow up ensues for detailed strategies and actioning of them, #watchthisspace
