Just came out of a guest speaking session for a Year 12 English class on the topic of ‘Encountering Conflict’. I spoke to the obstacles of media and political rhetoric in distorting realities. Responses from students were adept – showing keen interest in fighting Islamophobia and how Australia Muslims reacted to Orlando. I shared the media statement from June 15th which was received enthusiastically and noted by teachers as a document to be used for further class discussion.
Considering this is a private girls school, I was pleased to see such reception for these issues, acknowledged by them as grossly underrepresented in public discourse.
