An incredible day at Kimberley College in Brisbane at their annual Invictus Conference. This Conference is four day event in which all secondary school students attend numerous workshops and presentations issues including : mindfulness, loss and grief, goal setting, porn harm & cyber safety, among others, culminating in a concert/ festival finale on Friday.
I delivered three separate workshops to students in Years 10, 11 and 12 on ‘Adversity in Diversity’ – examining the broader gains of activism, individually and collectively.
This conference was a massive endeavour, in scope and purpose. I was blown away by the respect and sense of community these students showed me and each other. And their ability to want to table issues of racism and identity, in a largely middle white school environment, was a welcome platform, particularly in light of the ramped up measures of dog whistling racism underpinning this Government’s latest ‘Aussie Values/ Citizenship’ trump card (aka TRUMP card).
Some days this struggle resembles one step forwards and three steps backwards. Yet, the reception and progressive mindset of schools like Kimberley College, mean the struggle is always worth it.
