Project Description

SOCIAL justice activist Tasneem Chopra will use the second annual Molly Hadfield Social Justice Oration to speak out against racism and domestic violence.

The social commentator, author and human rights advocate will deliver the oration this Thursday evening as part of the City of Darebin’s International Women’s Day celebrations.

“I’m probably going to focus on a couple of things – the first will be how social justice impacts the perception of the Muslim community, particularly women,” Ms Chopra said.

“Incidences and actions of violence perpetrated against Australian women who happen to be Muslim have been pretty horrific in the last several months.

“We’ve gone from seeing things like insults and spitting and scarfs – for those who wear scarfs – being pulled, right through to death threats and threats of rape and attack.”

Ms Chopra said she would also discuss the political, economic and social implications of violence against all women.

The oration is named after late activist and Darebin resident Molly Hadfield OAM.

Ms Chopra will be joined at the event by female poets and musicians.

The free event will be held at the Preston Shire Hall, 286 Gower St, Preston, from 6pm on Thursday, March 5.
